This is one of Victoria’s historic homes that was lived in by the Gold Rush Magistrate and Commissioner Peter O’Reilly, along with his wife Caroline. The estate overlooks the water of Gorge Waterway and was one of the most popular places that were frequented for afternoon tea.
The estate is a walk back into the past surrounded by today’s business and industry located near the water, with lush gardens and the Italian designed home. Tea on the lawn is served while visitors are comfortably seated in wicker and cushioned seating that alone will take the guest back to the days when things were simpler. The visitor will also be able to see Selkirk Waterway as they stroll among the treed and flowered gardens, whose scents will waft through the area where tea is being served.
Visitors today can have afternoon tea on the lawn while watching the water and then take a guided tour of the home that was built in the mid to late 19th century. The home has been restored to its original condition and if filled with antiques and heirloom that include the family’s china and portraits. The home gives the visitor a look into how the man that was important during the Gold Rush and his family lived during the years when Victoria and other cities in British Columbia were making history.
